Breakouts 1 and 2 Workforce/Angel Investing
Breakout 1: The Changing Workforce
Doug Devlin
Generational differences were changing the workforce even before the pandemic. Now we must rethink many of our assumptions, whether as managers, investors, or parents. Is it reasonable to expect workers to be in the office full-time, part-time, or ever? What do members of Gen Z want from their jobs, and is that compatible with growth and profitability? What benefits and job features are most likely to attract, retain, and motivate today’s workforce?

Breakout 2: Angel Investing
Elisa Miller-Out
One-way SERGErs can support entrepreneurship is through angel investing. What should we expect as ange investors? What are the best ways to begin and participate? What are the pros and cons of the various models and partnerships? How important is due diligence and how can we do it effectively and efficiently? To what degree should we tie funding to advising or board seats? How can we maximize both impact on startups and financial returns?

Session 2: The Continuing Case for Racial Equity for Black Americans in The Startup Ecosystem - Rodney Sampson
Bainbridge, Hotel 1000
In 2020, Rodney Sampson and Brad Feld joined forces to launch the Racial Equity Ecosystem Pledge. Dozens of funders pledged to increase resources for Black American fund managers and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, most signers never fulfilled their commitments, and relevant funding actually decreased since. Moreover, a recent lawsuit targets the legality of the Fearless Fund, a venture fund focused on Black women founders, in its restricting funding to that group. Rodney Sampson, an advisor at Fearless Fund, will discuss a framework for scalable racial equity throughout the ecosystem and facilitate a broader discussion of racial issues within our personal and professional lives.

Breakout 4: Non-Partisan Political Activism
Martin Babinec
Trust in government is at a low point. Incentives for elected officials are driving policy outcomes (or lack thereof) that put party power ahead of voter's interests. This session will start with an overview of structural issues that both push candidates to the extremes and are dramatically reducing the pragmatic consensus building most voters want. We'll segue into the under-reported but growing national movement for reforming certain election processes as we discuss avenues to engage in non-partisan efforts aimed at putting country over party and a government becoming more responsive, inclusive, and balanced.

Both personal and business cyberattacks have increased substantially in frequency and sophistication. This session will discuss the growing risks and suggest ways you can protect yourself, your family, and your business.

Session 4: Socially responsible investing/impact investing
Kahlil Byrd
It’s ironic that while we’re trying to make the world better, most of our invested assets aren’t helping directly – and may be doing harm. How can you make your investments do something positive while meeting your financial needs? What are the implications of moving money to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) or other socially responsible funds? How can you make your cash serve a social purpose without taking on more risk? We’ll discuss various strategies for using your money for good purposes without giving it away.
